Venous thromboembolism in children – clinical features and treatment
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) has a higher occurrence in adults than in children. However, in the last twenty years there has been a significant increase in the incidence of thrombosis in children, especially in tertiary referral hospitals. Infants and adolescents have the highest risk for VTE. In the case of the slightest suspicion of thrombosis in children it is necessary to do a thorough clinical examination and at least an ultrasound examination, as well as D-dimmer from the blood. When VTE is diagnosed, it is best to start the treatment immediately or to consult a center with experience in treating children suffering from thrombosis. Timely initiated therapy with an appropriate dose of the drug leads to very rapid improvement and a better final outcome of treatment.
