The importance of good cardiovascular outcomes in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes: Results from the diabetology arm of the ADVANCE-ON study

Abstract:

The correlation between type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease has been well known for several years. The study ADVANCE-ON, an observational extension of one of the most important clinical studies in the field of diabetology, the ADVANCE study, helped in determining the new aspects of their mutual relations, which have a great importance in daily clinical practice. ADVANCE-ON included 8.494 patients with type 2 diabetes who were monitored for a total of 10 years, five years during the main study and five years during its continuation. The diabetology arm of the study confirmed the cardiovascular safety of the intensive treatment, based on gliclazide MR, and showed the maintenance of renal benefits. In the anti-hypertensive arm, an overall reduction of total and cardiovascular mortality was reduced.
