Thiomersal and contact dermatitis
Thimerosal is an organic mercury-based compound often used in medicine as an antiseptic due to its bactericidal and fungicidal properties. It is often found in ophthalmologic products, contact lens solutions and vaccines and frequently used as disinfectant in the manufacture of cosmetic products. Although it is relatively safe to use, it has side effects, especially in persons allergic to this allergen. Clinical studies have shown that reduced use of thimerosal leads to a decrease in the incidence of allergic reactions, especially to vaccines. The presence of thimerosal in solutions used for preservation of vaccines is believed to be connected with increased rates of contact dermatitis, which is one of the most important side effects of vaccination. Therefore, it is important to analyze the aetiology of skin changes in order to select the best treatment. The process of modifying the content of vaccines takes a long time and requires further and more detailed research into replacement of allergens.
