Attitudes and prejudices towards the elderly

Abstract:

It is important to emphasize that age and aging are not synonyms. First of all, age is conditioned by two dimensions: biological and sociological (the relationship with old people in different societies - they are often socially marginalized). Most commonly, the sociological dimension is a subject to negative stereotypes of aging and old age. Common beliefs about the aging process result in negative stereotypes - simplified and biased views of old people. Such beliefs about the aging process inevitably affect the social image of the old people. Unlike some other stigmatized groups, the elderly often internalize negative stereotypes and attitudes. Better knowing of the elderly and the specifics of aging helps to create better environment where two generations enjoy mutual respect and affection. It is indisputable to carry out scientific research focusing on the population of the elderly, their needs and opportunities. In the struggle against stereotype and ageism, there is an important role for the elderly who, by education and taking care of health, encourage the environment to contemplate and redefine the attitudes towards the elderly age group.
