Abstract:

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is breathing 100% oxygen in hyperbaric chambers at pressures greater than one bar. The basis of action is in a significant increase in the transport capacity of oxygen in body fluids which leads to rapid correction of hypoxia. In the world today, hyperbaric medicine is generally accepted and recognized as a special medical discipline. There are several lists of indications for HBOT, including the List of Indications of the Croatian Society for Hyperbaric Medicine of the Croatian Medical Association. It should be noted that the decision to treat each patient is made individually. Likewise, the approach to the patient should be multidisciplinary because only in this way do we achieve satisfactory success for the patient and the doctor. The guidelines are subject to change and updating as new insights are gained every day.
