Radiological imaging methods and intestinal inflammation

Author: Renata Huzjan Korunić
Abstract:

Radiological imaging is important in confirming the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease, assessing the level of involvement of intestinal tract, the disease activity and development of intestinal or extraintestinal complications. Possibilities of imaging are especially important in patients with Crohn’s disease, while they are somewhat more limited in patients with ulcerative colitis and other types of inflammatory intestinal diseases. The advantage of ultrasound and MR imaging is that the patients are not exposed to ionisation, making them methods of choice for children, young adults and patients that are susceptible to repeated follow-up examinations. CT is the method of choice in emergency situations and in the case of malignant alliteration as the method of choice for assessing the extent of the disease
