Abstract:

Improved survival of patients with the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has resulted in an increased attention to their quality of life and psychosocial needs. Psychological problems of patients with ESRD depends on the method of renal replacement therapy (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or renal transplantation). Also, patients have different physical and psychological limitations. Psychological needs of patients with ESRD should be recognized in order to provide appropriate treatment. A good collaboration between nephrologists and psychiatrists is mandatory in the treatment of patients with ESRD, irrespective of the method of renal replacement therapy.
