Abstract:

The laser beam has a wide range of applications, not only in medicine. The first surgical laser used in medicine was the ruby laser, about sixty years ago. Since then many types of lasers have been produced, and are successfully used in different branches of medicine. Old lasers are constantly replaced by new lasers. The advancement of technology in corrective medicine encouraged the creation of new systems that use a photon beam for therapeutic purposes. These include Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) devices and their related systems that are already in the field of dermatology, and will partially replace lasers for the removal of vascular, pigmented lesions, as well as hypertrichosis, acne and photorejuvenation. IPL devices work much faster and simpler than lasers. The non-agressive impact IPL light has on the skin surface excludes any recovery time, so patients can continue with their daily activities without the worry of negative side effects. Since it is painless, children can also undergo the procedure, which is another advantage of the IPL device.
