New diagnostic possibilities and classification of seronegative spondy
The last decade has seen huge progress in the treatment of inflammatory rheumatic diseases, especially spondyloarthritis, due to the use of new biologicals. Consequently, the need has arisen to revise the classification criteria and develop new diagnostic criteria that would allow reaching early diagnosis of these diseases. Previously used spondyloarthritis classification criteria were based on standard radiological criteria for sacroiliitis. The new diagnostic criteria emphasize the importance of magnetic resonance in the early detection of these diseases, since it has been established that inflammatory back pain may precede the development of radiological sacroiliitis for years. In May 2009, the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) adopted new guidelines that include important aspects of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of these diseases.
