Infertility – causes, diagnosis and treatment
According to the World Health Organization, nearly 15% of couples in the world are infertile, while additional 10% have reduced fertility. Infertility is not only a problem of individual person or couple, but also a public health problem affecting birth rate and reproductive health of people. Estimates are that 85% of couples who do not use birth control and have regular sex life will become pregnant in the first year of trying to conceive. Other couples will succeed in the second or third year of trying or seek medical help. Infertility should be suspected in a couple cannot conceive after one year of having regular unprotected sex and the woman is younger than 36 years of age, or after 6 months of having regular unprotected sex and the woman is older than 36 years of age, or if the woman becomes pregnant but is unable to carry a pregnancy to full term. A thorough knowledge of possible causes of infertility is the basis of successful approach to and treatment of infertility, especially today when there are numerous diagnostic and treatment methods available.
