Abstract:

Multiple system atrophy is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by different degree of autonomic nervous system dysfunction, cerebellar ataxia and Parkinsonism. In patients who present mostly with autonomic dysfunction, the diagnosis of multisystem atrophy is often overlooked. The patients usually undergo extensive cardiologic and urologic assessments, which in most cases do not show any pathological substrate. Therefore, the correct diagnosis, adequate therapy and patient care are often delayed. A good quality of life and reduction of symptoms may be achieved by qualified multidisciplinary approach, combined symptomatic therapy, physical therapy and motivation of doctors, nurses, caregivers, patients and their family members. We describe a case of a 62-year-old man with repetitive syncope, orthostatic hypotension, urinary dysfunction, Parkinsonism and cerebellar symptoms, who was diagnosed with multiple system atrophy.
