Abstract:

There are different therapeutic options for the treatment of recurrent acute respiratory infections (ARI) and more severe exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with a rational choice of antibiotic being especially important. A frequent use of antibiotics in patients with ARI or COPD may lead to the development of bacterial resistance to one or more antibiotics and, in combination with inadequate immunological response, contribute to frequent reinfections and repeated exacerbations. Therefore, the use of immunostimulators, such as OM 85-BV (Broncho-Vaxom) bacterial lysate, should be taken into consideration in the treatment of these patients. In the context of previous clinical research and due to the fact that any therapeutic measure that reduces the number, duration and severity of recurrent ARI is welcome, OM 85-BV (Broncho-Vaxom) represents a useful therapeutic option, especially in younger patients with recurrent ARIs and patients with frequent bacterial exacerbations of COPD.
