Abstract:

Interest in human sexuality problems has been increased not only due to the observation that sexual problems are more frequent than expected and that patients are reluctant to speak about them, but also due to recent advances in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions. The basic classification of sexual problems is divided according to the phases of sexual contact into problems with sexual desire or motivation, problems with sexual arousal and problems with orgasm. Classification related to partners discerns between personal problems (physical or mental health), relational problems (communication and emotions) and socially and culturally related problems. Diagnostic evaluation of sexual problems takes into account patient’s sexual identity and sexual role, hormonal status, previous sexual experience, actual sexual preferences, and signs of sexual abuse. The treatment includes surgical, psychological, pharmacological and other types of interventions. Advances in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men require a special attention. The treatment of erectile dysfunction should be managed by an experienced physician who can prescribe adequate medications and properly educate the patient in how to use them. The so-called “recreational use“ of medications for the treatment of erectile dysfunction is not recommended for either men or women.
