Chronis rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps

Abstract:

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a disease of the nasal and sinus mucosa, characterized by at least two of the following symptoms: nasal congestion, increased secretion, pressure or pain in the projection of the sinus and a disorder of the sense of smell. If symptoms are present for more than three months of the year, the disease is characterized as chronic. This definition implicates that the diagnosis could be set based on only good medical history. There are two main types of CRS: with and without nasal polyps. Treatment of CRS is based on nasal corticosteroids, frequent nose lavage, rational administration of antibiotics (usually only in exacerbations of inflammation). Surgical treatment is performed in case of a poor response to the medication and is followed by medication administration. Complications are rare but may be very serious as they are usually associated with the progression of a disease in the surrounding anatomical structures, i.e. the eye and brain.
