Chronic kidney disease in children

Author: Martin Ćuk, Bernardica Valent Morić, Nives Dabo
Abstract:

Congenital renal and urinary tract abnormalities are a major cause of chronic renal disease in childhood. The role of epigenetics in the pathophysiological development of the disease has been confirmed. Prenatal factors, gestational age, birth weight and diet have long-term effects on an individual’s tendency to develop chronic kidney disease. Obesity is an additional factor for the onset of renal impairment and the development of chronic kidney disease. The global increase in the number of patients with chronic kidney disease has a clear causal relationship with the worldwide obesity epidemic. The increase of obesity in the youngest age groups, as well as the new trend of growing number of children with severe early childhood obesity, is troublesome.
