Chronic kidney disease: definition and clasification
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the biggest public health problems in developed countries. In recent years several epidemiological studies have been carried out on the basis of which it can be concluded that 10% of the adult population in developed countries have CKD. A patients with CKD has an increased risk of pathological changes to many organs, especially of the cardio-vascular system. Because of this, many patients die even before the end stage renal disease. Although it is possible to detect CKD with simple, inexpensive laboratory tests, it is often detected too late, when it is much more difficult to halt or slow the spread of the disease, and to prevent its numerous complications. The goal of the article is to acquaint a wide circle of physicians with a new definition and classification of CKD.
