Abstract:

Diagnostic scales were developed for the purpose of objective evaluation of clinical condition, differentiation of symptoms and assessment of symptom intensity during treatment and follow-up. Although these instruments are primarily used for research (in epidemiologic, therapeutic or diagnostic studies), there is an increasing need for their use in everyday clinical practice. In general, the scales can be either diagnostic or symptom rating; they can be either self-administered (self-rating scales) or administered by trained investigators (observer rating scales). The diagnosis of bipolar disorder is difficult to make because of a variable clinical picture and course of illness. The use of self-rating scales in everyday practice can also be recommended for assessment of symptoms and treatment response, especially because these scales are easy to use.
