How to prevent development of maligant skin tumors
There has been an increase in the incidence of skin tumors, both those benign and malignant, occurring as a result of exposure to sunlight. Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous of these tumors and its incidence in the Republic of Croatia has almost tripled in the last four decades. Results of numerous studies demonstrate a significant association between the development of melanoma and long-term sun exposure. In addition to causing the malignant transformation of skin cells, UV rays also promote skin aging. The best protection from the sun is to avoid it. However, the way of life hinders this approach, so protective equipment and protective clothing during daily activities, especially for sensitive people, should be used from early spring to late autumn. Photo-protection must also be used in winter during skiing and staying at higher altitudes. The skin is especially sensitive to the first rays of the sun, so it is necessary to use creams with a sun protection factor on the first sunny days.
