How to optimize treatment of heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction following a worsening heart failure event and why does it matter?
Patients with heart failure after a worsening heart failure event, such as the need for intravenous diuretics, visit to the emergency department or hospitalization for treatment, have especially high-risk for further adverse events and premature cardiovascular death compared to the patients in the stable phase of chronic heart failure which were more often investigated in large randomised clinical trials. Results of VICTORIA trial, besides giving us a novel therapeutic option in these patients, give us also a new insight into the clinical course of the various groups of patients depending on the level of their subclinical and clinical congestion, and the progression of the disease itself
