Urinary incontinence in men

Author: Ivan Gilja
Abstract:

Due to increasing number of radical prostatectomy procedures, there is an increasing number of patients complaining of stress urinary incontinence. The prevalence of stress incontinence is 0.8-87.0%. Such a wide prevalence range is probably the result of differences in surgeon experience and lack of standard definition of urinary incontinence. The risk factors for incontinence include preoperative factors (age and preoperative continence status), intraoperative factors (surgical technique and surgeon’s experience), and postoperative factors. Bladder neck dysfunction and intraoperative nerve and sphincter damage play the major role in the development of incontinence. To maintain urinary continence, the minimal length of urethral sphincter complex should be 1.5 cm.
