Hormonal contraceptives in perimenopause
Late reproductive age and perimenopause, despite reduced fertility and lower chance for conception, bear the risk of unplanned pregnancy and complications for mother and child. All options of hormonal contraception are safe for use in healthy women up to the age of 50 with no health risks or diseases that are contraindications for the use of combined hormonal contraceptives. Numerous benefits of hormonal contraception have been proven in older women, such as regulating their monthly cycle, reducing bleeding rates, correcting anemia, treating dysmenorrhea, maintaining bone density, treating perimenopausal vasomotor disorders, insomnia, etc. Hormone contraception with progesterone is a choice for women with health risks. The safety of the administration is based on the medically acceptable criteria for the use of hormonal contraceptives.
