Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in emergency situations: first-line therapy
Author: Sead Žiga
Abstract:
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the first-line therapy in a number of conditions, the so-called clinical emergencies. Timely recognition and early initiation of HBOT are necessary factors for optimizing treatment outcomes. In case of delayed recognition, and more than 24 hours from the onset of symptoms, the use of HBOT is ju. stified. Often several HBOT treatments in a 24-hour period are necessary to achieve best results. Clinician awareness about the existence and availability of health facilities, with the possibility of applying hyperbaric oxygen therapy, is one of the fundamental factors in the management of these conditions.
