Hypebaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and chronic wound
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the therapeutic application of 100% oxygen under ambient pressure greater than the pressure prevailing at sea level (1 ATA – 1 absolute atmosphere = 760 mm Hg). It is performed in specially designed hyperbaric chambers that enable the implementation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in accordance with strictly prescribed safety and technical conditions. The indication of the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a supportive therapy in the treatment of various conditions, diseases and injuries are recognized daily through the benefits is expanding. With the progress of medicine, the aging of the population is increasing and, consequently, the number of indications for chronic wounds of various aetiologies is growing. Advanced techniques for treating chronic wounds in a surgical and conservative manner are being implemented, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly increases the biological potential of such wounds for healing. The benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy are recorded in the fields of surgery and related surgical professions, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, physical therapy and medical rehabilitation, endocrinology and obstetrics.
