Epidemiology of heart failure in Croatia

Author: Mario Ivanuša, Verica Kralj
Abstract:

Heart failure is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, and represents a major medical and economic burden on society. Demographic factors and reduced mortality from coronary heart disease, due to advances in treatment, cause the increase in prevalence and incidence of the disease. Heart failure is primarily a disease in the elderly. In people over 65, the incidence is 10 in every 1,000 per year, with a high five-year mortality rate despite modern treatment. In Croatia, 1,341 people died in 2013 due to the heart failure. As mortality increases with age, it is the highest in the oldest age groups. During the last decade a declining trend in mortality has been observed, while the number of hospitalizations remain stable. Given the expected increase in prevalence, it is necessary to improve prevention programs and healthcare.
