Diagnosis and assessment of the clinical features of hidradenitis suppurativa
The prevalence of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is around 1% in most European countries. Diagnosis and treatment of the disease is performed by family physicians, dermatologists and surgeons. Many of the mentioned health care providers may meet and examine patients suffering from HS. Patient’s present with characteristic scars in the armpits and groin, with or without inflammatory nodules, yet HS often goes misdiagnosed. It can take up to 8 years before a patient is finally diagnosed with the disease. Prompt recognition of this serious dermatosis is of utmost importance. Further, it is necessary to assess its clinical features in accordance with available classifications, to start adequate therapy promptly, and to assess the efficacy of the therapy as well as the quality of life of the patient.
