Advantages of new over old beta-blockers
Atenolol has been used in the treatment of hypertension for many decades. However, non-favourable effects on lipid metabolism and diabetes mellitus, many adverse reactions, and low efficacy in cardiovascular protection against myocardial infarction and stroke have led to downgrading of all beta-blockers in the treatment of hypertension in some countries. Bisoprolol, carvedilol, nebivolol and metoprolol succinate offer new therapeutic options and have a proven efficacy in the treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure and coronary disease with no extra cost due to adverse reactions or metabolic disturbances. These drugs are safe and can be prescribed to a selected group of patients for the treatment of hypertension, depending on their specific risk factors.
