The role of vitamin D in multiple sclerosis
Vitamin D is not only a vitamin but also a hormone, according to some of its features. It has an important role in various contemporary diseases, and it is assumed that a hypovitaminosis D pandemic is worldwide spread nowadays. Due to its immunomodulatory action, vitamin D is an important factor in the development and treatment of various autoimmune diseases, and one of these is multiple sclerosis (MS). In the treatment of patients with MS, a positive effect of vitamin D supplementation has been known for more than 10 years, in addition to immunomodulatory, immunosuppressive, and immunoreconstitutional medication. In the treatment of patients with MS, 3000 – 5000 i. u. of vitamin D is administered daily, or an equivalent cumulative dose weekly.
