Do we need a new definition and classification of chronic kidney disease?

Abstract:

Nineteen years ago, KDOQI (Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative) published guidelines for the definition, diagnosis and classification of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The goal was to help healthcare professionals identify chronic kidney disease in a timely manner, slow its progression, and prevent numerous complications. Shortly after and particularly after the KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) update 2012, a discussion developed about the need to adjust the age classification and the increased risk of overestimating and underestimating the number of patients with CKD. For now, there is insufficient evidence for a new definition and categorization of CKD. However, caution should be exercised in diagnosing CKD in younger and older individuals.
