Abstract:

Topical corticosteroids, one of the most widely used medications in topical dermatological therapy, have already been in use for 60 years. Their ability to reduce inflammatory response made them useful for treatment of a wide range of different skin disorders. There are many myths about topical corticosteroids. The most common is that topical corticosteroids should always be applied in smaller amounts than prescribed. Another incorrect belief is that cracked, broken or weepy skin should not be treated with topical corticosteroids. Many myths are also related to the side effects of topical corticosteroids, including the one that steroids promote excessive hair growth and cause stunted growth and development. Because of those myths, patients develop “steroid-phobia”, irrational fear and anxiety about the use and side effects of topical steroids. In this article, we describe the most important and recent facts about the indications, potency, side effects and patient approach to topical corticosteroids.
