Statin use in secondary prevention of acute coronary syndrome
Author: Mario Ivanuša
Abstract:
Secondary prevention after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is based on adequate pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment. Aspirin, clopidogrel, angiotensin convertase enzyme inhibitors, beta blockers and statins have all been shown beneficial and effective in the treatment of ACS patients. High-dose statin therapy immediately after ACS increases the survival of ACS patients due to its lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic effects, which stabilize atheromatous plaque. Accumulating evidence shows that atorvastatin 80 mg is currently the drug of choice in the treatment of ACS patients.
