Reducing mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a multisystemic and multicomponent disease. It starts with damaging the anatomy and function of the lungs and, in time, causes numerous systemic complications. Leading causes of mortality in patients with COPD are cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, and respiratory failure. COPD is an inflammatory disease, caused by smoking. Aims of treatment are to reduce symptoms, improve exertion capacity, improve the quality of life, prevent and treat exacerbations, slow down the disease progression, and reduce mortality. Combination therapy with inhalation corticosteroids and long-acting beta agonists plays a key role in the treatment of patients with COPD, because it improves the symptoms and exertion capacity, improves the quality of life, reduces exacerbations, slows down the disease progression and eventually reduces mortality
