Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Probiotics

Author: Indira Benjak Horvat, Goran Hauser
Abstract:

The onset and manifestation of irritable colon syndrome disease is associated with a number of factors, and its pathophysiology involves various central and peripheral mechanisms. The results of most studies indicate that influencing the gut microbiota could significantly improve subjective disorders in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (SIC) and could be recognized as a remedy in the form of probiotic supplements alone or in combination with prebiotics (symbiotics). Duration of treatment and the dosage of food supplements are among fundamental questions in the daily practice of treating the irritable bowel disease. No serious side effects have been reported, except for the possible transient intensification of the already present symptoms.
