Diabetes and oral health
Diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases seen by dental practicioners. The disease is accompanied by a number of complications in the organism, but also in the oral cavity. Complications of diabetes in the oral cavity include: acetone breath, dry mouth, impaired sense of taste, sialoadenosis, burning mouth syndrome, oral infections, oral lichen planus / lichenoid reaction, dental caries, periodontal disease and changes in bone. The expression of diabetes in the oral cavity is directly correlated to the level of disease control, and the changes and complications become more intense as the disease is less regulated. It is important to educate dentists, general practitioners and even patients about the impact of diabetes on oral health to help prevent, timely diagnose and properly treat oral complications.
