Abstract:

Resistant hypertension is often associated with the development of hypertensive kidney disease and results in several times higher risk of developing hypertensive damage to other organs and cardiovascular complications. In women, the risk of developing resistant hypertension is higher than in men. Women with resistant hypertension are more likely to be obese, have dyslipidemia and diabetes, and are older in comparison with men. Women with resistant hypertension have a 1.4-fold higher risk for overall mortality than women with controlled hypertension and a 2.3-fold higher risk than women without hypertension.
