Guidelines (algorithm) for psychopharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder

Abstract:

The article presents the current guidelines (algorithm) for psychopharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder. Therapy of acute manic, hypomanic or mixed episode with or without psychotic symptoms is discussed. Special attention is given to the treatment options of bipolar depression, which are less known. Although the depressive phase of bipolar disorder is more frequent, it often goes recognized. A special chapter is dedicated to the treatment of rapid cycling. Therapeutic resistance is discussed, as well as the role of electroconvulsive therapy in treatment of bipolar disorder. Also, recommendations are provided for maintenance therapy aimed at prevention of relapse.
