Prevention of chronic venous insufficiency

Author: Sandra Marinović Kulušić, Jasna Lipozenčić
Abstract:

Chronic venous insufficiency is a consequence of a cascade of events leading to pathological changes in veins and tissues and resulting in chronic venous hypertension. Long-term venous hypertension has various clinical manifestations in lower limbs, depending on the severity and duration of venous circulation impairment (corona phlebectatica, dermatitis hypostasicum and ulcus cruris hypostasicum). Compression therapy is indicated at every stage of chronic venous insufficiency and lymphoedema. The therapy is based on the use of a compression device that produces pressure on a particular part of the body to increase lymph or venous blood flow and reduce oedema. Systemic treatment may include vascular protective and tonifying agents, antiaggregation agents, fibrinolytics and leukocyte adhesion inhibitors.
