Metabolic syndrome diet

Abstract:

Diet therapy in patients with metabolic syndrome is aimed at improving insulin sensitivity and prevention and alleviation of associated metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. The approach to lifestyle changes includes reduction and maintenance of weight, appropriate level of physical activity and adequate diet. In recent years, there has been increasing evidence of beneficial effects of Mediterranean type of diet on metabolic syndrome. Also, food with low glycemic index can improve the function of beta-cells in patients with glucose intolerance. In prescribing diet therapy, it is important to use individual approach. Since May 2011, hypolipaemic Mediterranean diet has been available to all in-patients at the Zagreb University Hospital Centre.
