Nocturia - why it is important for a family medicine doctor
Author: Ana-Marija Vargantolić, Valerija Bralić Lang
Abstract:
Nocturia or nocturnal urination is an episode of urination during the night, which is a common symptom that patients often do not report, considering it a normal occurrence associated with older age. Its prevalence varies with age and gender and can be caused by various factors such as disorders of the urinary system function, increased urine production, or sleep disorders. Careful individual differentiation of the causes is necessary for the proper approach to the treatment. Thorough medical history, including a physical examination and voiding diary, is crucial in identifying the causes, with targeted diagnostics being helpful as well. Treatment is based on patient education about proper lifestyle habits and the treatment of underlying conditions, with an emphasis on an individualized approach. Nocturia, with its impact on quality of life, poses a challenge for family physicians who play a key role in recognizing, diagnosing, and managing this underrecognized health issue.
