Multidisciplinary approach to treatment of weight loss – role of abdominoplasty
Obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century. Its prevalence has tripled in the last two decades. The recommended medical approach to weight loss consists of restricted caloric intake, exercise and anti-obesity drugs. For those with weight-related health problems and unable to achieve weight loss through diet and exercise programs alone, intragastric balloon treatment and bariatric surgery provide a reasonable therapeutic option. Successful weight loss treatment can leave loose skin on the abdomen, which can be a source of psychological and physical problems. These patients feel and look obese and require multiple body contouring operations, such as abdominoplasty. Abdominoplasty improves quality of life and is crucial in the rehabilitation of these patients.
