Central nervous system infections in the immunocompromised patients

Author: Vladimir Krajinović
Abstract:

Central nervous system (CNS ) infections in immunocompromised patients depend on the type of defect in the immune defence of the patient. Also, specific types of organisms with a tendency to cause CNS infections will take advantage of the different types of immune defects. Signs and symptoms of CNS infection are often quite subtle in these patients because of the diminished inflammatory response of the host. Quick and aggressive diagnostic approach is often necessary, including early brain biopsy and abscess drainage. Therapy also has to be administered as soon as possible, including multiple potentially toxic antibiotics t . hat are given for weeks.
