Filoviruses (Ebola and Marburg viruses) - local or global problem today?

Author: Vladimir Krajinović
Abstract:

Ebola and Marburg viruses are among the most virulent human pathogens, causing severe hemorrhagic fever which is clinically presented as fulminant septic shock. The diagnosis is established on the basis of epidemiological anamnesis and clinical findings, and is confirmed through fast serological and molecular tests used for the detection of antigens in the blood or other bodily fluids. Standard, contact and droplet protective measures should be used in patients who have been hospitalized due to a known or suspected filovirus disease. Supportive treatment is the only possible treatment for filoviruses, as no specific therapy exists. Historically, outbreaks caused by these viruses are connected to the African continent and rarely attracted attention of the world wide public. The ongoing epidemic in 2014 is the largest so far, and due to its spreading into urban areas of African countries, other continents may be exposed to this disease.
