Multiple sclerosis phenotype – RIS, CIS, RRMS, highly active MS
The classification of patients with multiple sclerosis based on their disease phenotype is of scientific and clinical importance. It has provided scientific advances in understanding the disease pathology, course and disease management while clinically it has enabled early treatment, slowing / stopping disease activity, and most importantly, reducing the progression of patient disability.. Multiple sclerosis classification includes the high risk phase, the relapsing-remitting phase and the progressive phase. The high risk phase is represented by clinically isolated syndrome, with early treatment indicated to delay the transition to further phases of multiple sclerosis. The relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis is the most prevalent, but also with the greatest therapeutic options. In the progressive phase of multiple sclerosis there is a unique clinical picture, but therapeutic options vary depending on the specific type of progression.
