Differential diagnosis of pain in dentistry

Author: Adnan Ćatović
Abstract:

Pain in the orofacial region is one of the most common reasons for a patient to seek help from dental surgeons. In most cases, a pathological substrate is located within the soft and/or hard dental tissues or surrounding periodontal or gingival structures. However, the source of pain can also be elsewhere. The temporomandibular joint, ear, eye, nose, sinus and brain conditions should, therefore, be included in differential diagnosis of orofacial pain. The diagnostic procedure for determining the source of pain in dentistry is based on a detailed medical and dental history, clinical examination and radiological findings
