Obesity and vitamin D deficiency
Obesity is a condition of excessive accumulation of adipose tissue in the body and is one of the leading public health problems today. Vitamin D is a prohormone produced in the skin by ultraviolet radiation, and plays a key role in calcium and phosphorus metabolism and maintaining bone health. Its many extraosseous functions have been discovered as well, such as reducing type 1 collagen production, improving muscle function, promoting cell differentiation, insulin secretion and regulation of the immune system. Studies have shown low levels of vitamin D in obese people, and this association is explained by the deposition of vitamin D in adipose tissue due to its high solubility properties. Other mechanisms can not be ruled out either.
