Risk factors for chronic heart failure

Author: Kristina Selthofer-Relatić
Abstract:

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a complex clinical syndrome which occurs due to structural and/or functional cardiac disorder and leads to systolic and/or diastolic left ventricular dysfunction with typical symptoms and signs based on objective clinical findings and good response to CHF therapy. Most often CHF is combined with ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension, diabetes and atrial fibrillation. Adjustable risk factors for CHF are sedentary lifestyle, cigarette smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Healthy life habits, prevention of adjustable risk factors, early diagnosis and treatment of underlying disease and comorbidities decrease the incidence and progression of CHF and number of hospitalizations and eventually result in more efficient treatment, better life quality of CHF patients and decrease in mortality.
