Bloodless clinical strategies for management of severe anemia and hemorrhage

Author: Josip Slipac
Abstract:

Over the years, complex clinical strategies have been developed for managing patients requiring bloodless medical treatment, with an aim to minimize blood loss, conserve autologous blood, enhance hematopoiesis, and increase anemia tolerance. Effective strategies are used for perioperative treatment, acute blood loss, trauma care and obstetrics. By applying these strategies, patients with extremely low hemoglobin levels survive and recover without receiving allogeneic blood. Additionally, the valuable experience gained from bloodless treatment has paved the way to develop the concept of Patient Blood Management as the standard for the successful treatment of all patients, not only those to whom blood is not an option.
