Atopic dermatitis and the „atopic march“

Author: Nives Pustišek
Abstract:

Atopic dermatitis is a common chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease. It usually starts in early childhood and is often the first disease in developing „atopic march“, i.e. latter allergic asthma and/or allergic rhinitis. Great progress has been made in understanding the hereditary basis of atopic dermatitis and its ethiopathogenesis. Recent studies indicate that the dysfunctional skin barrier in atopic dermatitis is responsible for the subsequent development of allergic sensitization. Therapy targeting the reconstruction of damaged skin barrier may be able to prevent the development of subsequent atopic diseases.
