A preoperative anemia clinic

Author: Josip Slipac
Abstract:

Preoperative anemia occurs in at least a third of patients and is a significant, but at the same time modifiable risk factor for increased perioperative morbidity and mortality. Treatment through a preoperative anemia clinic may improve outcomes. Patients are evaluated at least 3 weeks before the scheduled surgery to allow time for treatment of iron-deficiency anemia or further testing and follow-up care. Patient access to early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of preoperative anemia is a key element of preparing the patient for successful surgery treatment. Establishing a specialized preoperative anemia clinic can significantly help in reaching this goal.
