Patients with thyroid diseases in a dental practice
Thyroid diseases and disorders are common in dental practice. Thyroid function disorders are manifested as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Depending on the type of disorder, severity and the level of control, the dentist adjusts the dental procedure by considering the application of local anesthetics, susceptibility to infections, achieving hemostasis, as well as the action and interaction of medicines in patients with thyroid disease. It is important for the dentist to have knowledge of the various types of thyroid diseases, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostics and therapy, as well as oral manifestations of thyroid diseases and disorders - not only to adapt dental treatments, but also to contribute with his/her knowledge and experience to an early diagnosis of the disorder.
