Skraćeni zubni luk i mogućnosti zbrinjavanjaVarious treatment modalities of the shortened dental arch

A shortened dental arch (SDA) is a dentition where the most posteriorly located teeth are missing (loss of molar support). This condition is seen frequently as molars are often lost by caries as well as periodontal disease. In the shortened dental arches the remaining premolars tend to migrate distally, which may lead to a decrease of the vertical dimension, resulting in an increased load on the anterior teeth. This is considered a non-compensated shortened dental arch. However, in many patients with the loss of molars there can be a slight migration towards the distal, which is in acceptable levels, without a decrease in the vertical dimension and contacts in the frontal area, and this is considered a compensated shortened dental arch. Missing posterior teeth are not very important from the patients’ subjective aspect. Many studies have shown a large discrepancy between professionally assessed and subjective treatment need, especially among elderly people.
